Traveling with a 9 Month Old: What to Pack

June 30th, 2010

IMG_5256Tomorrow my husband and I and our nine month old son will be on a plane flying from Prague to Los Angeles. Of course, I’ve been panicking about packing for the past three weeks.

How do you pack for a six week trip overseas with a nine month old?? What will we need? How do I still pack light and manageable? I’ve been trying to reach back into my brain for all of the travel tips I’ve received over the many years I’ve been flying and for all of the best practices I’ve used myself over the years. Of course this trip would be different, this would only be our second long hull flight with a baby, and our first trip with a mobile 9 month old.

So, first, I made a plan.

I sat down and wrote out everything I need to do and pack before we go. Maybe this won’t help others, but I am definitely a list person so this helps me. After making my massive list I made my own little calendar and divided up all of my tasks by days. This enabled me to have small manageable lists for each day before we left.

One of the hardest things was figuring out what to pack for my 9 month old baby. So, here’s the check list I finally put together.

Packing Check List for Baby:

  • Diapers and wipes – we normally use cloth diapers, but when we are traveling and staying in hotels and other people’s homes we definitely use disposables – it makes things so much easier.
  • Blankets – I plan on bringing a few blankets, some that I can put on the floor so our little one can sit on the ground no matter where we are and others for wrapping him up in if it’s chilly in the evening.
  • Toys –I packed up the toys we are packing a week before we left, in the hopes that they will then seem new to my son and more interesting. I’m not bringing a lot of toys though, instead I plan on getting creative. For example, an empty water bottle with a pen inside, a hotel key, or a baby’s shoe, can become fascinating toys for a 9 month old.
  • Clothing and Pajamas – what you pack in this category will depend upon where you are going and how long you will be there as well as whether or not you will be able to do laundry where you are staying. We will be spending a good deal of time at the beach so I will pack light weight cloths and a swim suit for my son.
  • Hats and a Natural Sunscreen – Since we will be in warm places and often in the sun and at the beach these will be important.
  • Bath Stuff – I plan on bringing a little bit of natural baby soap and the frog water thermometer we have which is also my son’s favorite bath toy. If I have room I’ll pack one of his hooded towels, if not then we will just use regular towels from the hotel or our guests home.
  • Thermometer – just in case.
  • Feeding Items – We just started giving Thaddeus goats milk (to fatten him up) so I will bring a sippy cup. Other than that we are mostly giving him finger foods so I probably won’t bother with bringing a baby spoon (he does ok with a regular teaspoon sometimes anyhow if I want to feed him something while we’re traveling). I still breastfeed and we don’t give formula so I don’t have to think about packing that. Oh, I’ll also bring a bib or two cause this kid can get messy!
  • Car seat – we will be driving at our destination so we will bring a car seat and check it at the airport.
  • Stroller – We have a great travel bag for our stroller so we will check it at the airport and just carry Thad in my Sleepy Wrap through security and while actually traveling.
  • Travel Cot/Pack n’ Play – Ok, so we won’t actually be bringing this since the hotel we will be at provides one and the rest of the time we will be with family who also have Pack n’ Plays. We sleep with Thad at night right now so I’m not too worried if there is an occasional night between destinations when we don’t have one. But, if you aren’t staying somewhere with a place for your baby to sleep it might be a good idea to pack this as well.

Carry-on/Diaper Bag Check List:

  • Diapers – double the amount I would normally use during the time period (just in case)IMG_5265
  • Changing Mat – I have a great mat built into my diaper bag, which makes it so easy for traveling and changing my son anywhere.
  • Pajamas – we will be traveling an overnight red eye flight so I’ll want him to sleep
  • Cloths – I plan on bringing at least three outfits for him (again just in case)
  • Cloths for my Husband and I – one outfit change each (again just in case)
  • A few plastic bags – for soiled clothing or other dirties
  • Snacks for Thaddeus and my husband and I – Often airplane food isn’t real food, so I like to bring plenty of healthy real food snacks with us when traveling. Plus a finger food snack can be a great thing to keep a kid entertained for a while.
  • WIPES – lots of them. They come in handy for a lot of things besides diaper changes, like cleaning up after eating, or wiping down the tray table in front of your seat.
  • Toys and books – my son is only 9 months old but he loves it when we read books to him. Since reading is a fairly quiet activity I will definitely be bringing some books on the plane as well as just a few of his favorite toys.
  • Blanket – It can be cold on planes so best to be prepared
  • Nasal Saline spray – It can be very dry on the plan and this can help keep your baby’s nasal passages comfortable.
  • Anti-bacteria Hand Sanitizer – Ok, so I’m generally against this stuff, and I don’t ever use it on a regular basis, but on long haul flights with a baby it just seems like a good idea to me to have it on hand and use it if necessary.
  • Pacifier – Thaddeus hasn’t really taken a pacifier, but lately he does like to chew on one now and then, which might help with his ears on the plan if he doesn’t want to nurse during takeoff or landing.
  • Baby Carrier – I’ll bring my Sleepy Wrap and carry my son in that through the airport and security. We did that last time we flew with him when he was 4 months old and it was great.
  • Passports – This is very important since we are traveling abroad. As a side note: Babies need a passport to travel outside of the US, but usually not on domestic flights.
  • Camera and Video camera – I’m sure there will be plenty to capture during our travels as well as once we reach our destination.
  • Books/Magazines – All of the airlines we fly for long haul flights have little TV’s built in the seat in front of you, so we often bring books and magazines and then never end up looking at them because we just watch a movie and then fall asleep. This time I probably won’t bring a book or anything for on the plane, I’m sure I’ll have enough to do dealing with Thaddeus. But, my husband will probably want to read, so I will pack a bit of reading material.

What do you pack for your baby/toddler on long trips? Is there anything that is on my list that you wouldn’t include?

What’s the most stressful part of packing for you? What do you always forget or wish you had packed? Do you ever end up with things that you regret bringing?

Traveling with a 9 Month Old: Real Food for a Long Haul Flight

June 29th, 2010

IMG_5283This week we will be leaving Prague and flying to the states for a six week visit. One of the things that I always dread about flying is the food. Airline food is packed full of preservatives and additives – most of the time it is NOT real food. So, whenever I fly I like to bring a good amount of snacks and healthy food choices for my husband and myself (and, this time, our 9 month old baby as well).

Today I thought I’d share with you what real food I plan on bringing on our 16 hour trip.

For the Baby:

  • Breast milk – of course J
  • Cooked Carrots and/or Potato – cut into smallish strips (think French fries) that he can hold and naw on without making too much of a mess.
  • Green Peas –I will put these into his mesh lined teething feeder because I worry about him choking on them.
  • Apple – I will probably put pieces of these into his mesh things as well.
  • Quinoa Coconut Teething biscuits – ok, so this is something I plan on trying to make and I’m sort of playing with a recipe in my head, but I’m not sure if it’ll work out or not. If it works and he likes them I’ll be sure to post the recipe on the blog soon.
  • Cooked chicken pieces – torn or cut up into small pieces that he can safely eat.
  • Goats milk/Goats milk yogurt – if I can find these in the London airport during our layover then I’ll give him one or the other of these things, but I’m not sure I’ll be able to find them and I don’t want to hassle with bringing liquid through security so I won’t bring them from home.

For Bryan and I:

  • Quinoa Trail Mix Protein Bars – this is another recipe that I’ve been playing with in my head and will try out for this trip, but as of yet I don’t know how they will turn out. Again if this one turns out I’ll post the recipe soon.
  • Raw Cut up Veggies – we usually bring carrots and some bell peppers and sometimes sugar snap peas as good snacks.
  • Sandwiches made on homemade Sourdough English muffins – I’ll probably put slices of chicken, cheese, avocado, arugula, tomato, and cucumber on our sandwiches. This will be a great lunch for us during our flight to London.
  • Homemade Sourdough bagels with homemade cream cheese – I love bagels, so this is a favorite snack for me and an easy thing for on the plane.
  • Sourdough crackers – if you couldn’t tell from the last two I’m trying to use up my sourdough starter before we go.
  • Dark Chocolate – I will probably avoid this since Thaddeus doesn’t seem to do all that well with me eating chocolate and breastfeeding, but my husband likes this as an easy relatively healthy in-flight snack.
  • Apple – Apples are great because they don’t get overly mushy (like peaches or pears or banana or strawberry, all of which we’ve tried unsuccessfully on a plane before). We’ll probably take one or two apples and share them between the three of us.

So, what are your favorite real food snacks while traveling? I’d love to hear your suggestions!

Summer Blogging Plan

June 28th, 2010

Today I wanted to take a little break from the normal schedule and my normal Admiration Monday posts to tell you a little bit about what to expect from me and this space over the coming months.

July

My husband and I will be traveling in the states for the whole month of July, which means that things may be a little out of the ordinary here on my blog. So, I wanted to give you all a heads up so you know what’s going to be happening.

I value this space and the community that is just beginning to develop around it. I want to continue building that community and make this a valuable and helpful space for all of you who visit me here. I don’t want my traveling to disrupt this space too drastically (as it has in the past). So, I will continue to post regularly while I travel.

IMG_3316But, I also wants to spend my long July days twirlying with my niece (isn’t she cute!), playing hid-n-go seek with my nephews, giggling with my beautiful sisters, eating ice cream with my cousins, sharing stories with my friends, going on long walks with my husband, cuddling with my baby, and generally soaking in the sunshine and beauty that is summer. To balance these two desires I’ve decided to enlist some help, plan ahead and let a few things go.

I’ve asked some dear, beautiful friends to write some guest posts for all of you to enjoy. So, expect to see a few guest posts around here in the coming weeks. Each of the people who will be writing guest posts mean so much to me and I’m really so excited to share them with you. I can’t wait to read what they will write, and feel so blessed that they have agreed to share a little bit of themselves here on my blog.

I have also been doing a lot of writing ahead of time, so that I won’t have to write as much while traveling. Because of this I can tell you I have some fun posts coming your way. I have a series about Traveling with a 9 Month Old that will start this week, recipes like macadamia nut pancakes with coconut syrup, Fish Burgers, and Olive Oil Cake, posts about How to Tell a Good Bed Time Story and a little about My Education. I hope you enjoy these and many other posts that I have planned for the coming weeks.

Even though guest bloggers and good planning will lighten the load for me I know that I still won’t have as much time to devote to you all. So, I want you to know up front that it might take me a little longer than normal to moderate comments, or respond to them. It might take me a little longer than normal to respond to your emails as well. I might not comment on all of your wonderful blogs quite as often. And I may not participate in all of the blog carnivals that I normal try to engage with. Don’t worry though I will definitely still be doing Two for Tuesday!

So, that’s July.

August

I’m supper excited about what I have planned for August here on the blog…IMG_5173

August 18th will be my husband and my 5th wedding anniversary. I know it’s not really that long, but it sort of feels like the first really significant anniversary we’ve had. I love being married to my husband and I can’t wait to celebrate with him. So, I’m expanding our celebration to include this site by naming August my own personal Love and Marriage Month.

I plan on all of the posts in August having to do with Love and Marriage. I plan on sharing my husband and my story with you – how we met, got engaged and what our wedding was like. My Admiration Monday posts will be about couple’s who I admire and have learned from. I’ll feature guest posts about marriage and love (speaking of which, if you are interested in writing a guest post on this subject please contact me, I’d love to talk with you about it). And maybe also write a bit about wedding planning. But, don’t worry there will still be lots of recipes too – maybe a wedding cake recipe, or a post about foods that can be aphrodisiacs, or a romantic dinner menu, who knows what I’ll come up with once inspiration strikes.

Oh, I’m so excited! I want to go start writing posts for August right now! Focus, Bethany, focus. First things, first!

Well, that’s what the summer will look like around here. I hope you enjoy your summer as much as I know I will! And I hope that you continue to visit regularly. You all are a blessing and encouragement to me!

Scenes From My Life: Our Neighborhood

June 27th, 2010

Today I wanted to give you all a little tour of our neighborhood here in Prague, so you could catch a little glimpse of what life is like for an American mommy living in Europe. I’ll show you the street we live on, our local grocery store, our local health food store, the park nearby, and a few other little things in the blocks right around our house.

A little background which you may or may not find interesting…

Prague is made up of a number of different quarters.  We live in Karlin, which was the first district to be built just outside the walls of old Prague and is situated just to the east of city center, along the river. It was first established as a town in the early 1800’s and grew very quickly. It’s proximity to Wenceslas Square and Old Town Square made it appealing then and continue to make it an appealing district today. Industrial plants played an important part in the areas original development as well, with a number of significant factories located in Karlin. Today most of those old factory buildings have been turned into office buildings and shops.

Karlin became part of Greater Prague in 1922 and has sense then gone through many transitions. Originally it was a very nice area to live in with a lot of money poured into the beautiful buildings and architecture. One site I read said this about it, “This area was very, very interesting from a social point of view… The bourgeoisie lived here together with workers, and there were no social problems. The whole spectrum of society lived together in Karlin.” In the 1950’s the area began to decline and eventually it got a little bit of a bad reputation.

In 2002, the whole area was completely flooded. Karlin had the most damage from the flood and the whole district was two or three meters under water. This meant that after the flood there was a lot of reconstruction in the area and many of the old buildings were redone. Some are still being re-built and renovated. All this construction gave Karlin a new image and a number of new companies moved into the area.

I kind of feel like, now, Karlin has returned back to its roots of being a place where “the whole spectrum of society” lives together.

Well, here’s a little bit of Karlin for you to enjoy!
