Traveling with a 9 Month Old: Real Food for a Long Haul Flight

June 29th, 2010

IMG_5283This week we will be leaving Prague and flying to the states for a six week visit. One of the things that I always dread about flying is the food. Airline food is packed full of preservatives and additives – most of the time it is NOT real food. So, whenever I fly I like to bring a good amount of snacks and healthy food choices for my husband and myself (and, this time, our 9 month old baby as well).

Today I thought I’d share with you what real food I plan on bringing on our 16 hour trip.

For the Baby:

  • Breast milk – of course J
  • Cooked Carrots and/or Potato – cut into smallish strips (think French fries) that he can hold and naw on without making too much of a mess.
  • Green Peas –I will put these into his mesh lined teething feeder because I worry about him choking on them.
  • Apple – I will probably put pieces of these into his mesh things as well.
  • Quinoa Coconut Teething biscuits – ok, so this is something I plan on trying to make and I’m sort of playing with a recipe in my head, but I’m not sure if it’ll work out or not. If it works and he likes them I’ll be sure to post the recipe on the blog soon.
  • Cooked chicken pieces – torn or cut up into small pieces that he can safely eat.
  • Goats milk/Goats milk yogurt – if I can find these in the London airport during our layover then I’ll give him one or the other of these things, but I’m not sure I’ll be able to find them and I don’t want to hassle with bringing liquid through security so I won’t bring them from home.

For Bryan and I:

  • Quinoa Trail Mix Protein Bars – this is another recipe that I’ve been playing with in my head and will try out for this trip, but as of yet I don’t know how they will turn out. Again if this one turns out I’ll post the recipe soon.
  • Raw Cut up Veggies – we usually bring carrots and some bell peppers and sometimes sugar snap peas as good snacks.
  • Sandwiches made on homemade Sourdough English muffins – I’ll probably put slices of chicken, cheese, avocado, arugula, tomato, and cucumber on our sandwiches. This will be a great lunch for us during our flight to London.
  • Homemade Sourdough bagels with homemade cream cheese – I love bagels, so this is a favorite snack for me and an easy thing for on the plane.
  • Sourdough crackers – if you couldn’t tell from the last two I’m trying to use up my sourdough starter before we go.
  • Dark Chocolate – I will probably avoid this since Thaddeus doesn’t seem to do all that well with me eating chocolate and breastfeeding, but my husband likes this as an easy relatively healthy in-flight snack.
  • Apple – Apples are great because they don’t get overly mushy (like peaches or pears or banana or strawberry, all of which we’ve tried unsuccessfully on a plane before). We’ll probably take one or two apples and share them between the three of us.

So, what are your favorite real food snacks while traveling? I’d love to hear your suggestions!

I hate trying to scrounge for food while I travel also and always try to pack ahead. I try to bring sandwiches and fresh fruit, salads are also a love of mine. Apples, since they can weather just about anything.

Have a safe and fun trip!

  2. Hey Beth.

How funny- both you and Alex are going away and you both have posts with great snacks to travel with! love it!

Lots of great ideas you have here Beth!
I love the idea of the quinoa trail mix bars! Looking forward to seeing that recipe!

    Have a great flight!

  3. Looks like you have a feast to enjoy! I would add hard boiled eggs, sardines with mustard, cold pancakes (any kind), beef jerky or turkey jerky, hot or cold veggie soups in thermoses.
    thanks for the ideas!

What a great post…can you believe I’ve never been on an airplane!? Me….who dreams of traveling overseas…never even flown =( But I’m keeping all of yours (and Alex’s) travel snack in mind for when I finally do! I love that mesh, feeding teether- how cool! I’m gonna have to search one out for my little sis who has 3 little ones (under17 months…twins in there)! Safe travels =)

  5. [...] This time I’m making my own protein bars to take on the flight for my husband and myself. I am also planning on trying to make some quinoa teething cookies for my baby. I may also bring a little bit of meat such as chicken that he can snack on during the flight. You can read more about my plan for eating real food while traveling HERE. [...]

Heather, wow! I don’t think I’ve ever known anyone who’s never flown – you are the first! Well, definitely save up the tips for when that day comes :)
And yes, I totally recommend the mesh feeding teether – it’s so great to just stick some REAL food in there and not have to worry too much about him choking on it or anything. We put ice cubes in there too, which my son seems to really like and I think feels really nice when his gums are hurting.

Sarah, those are all such great suggestions! Thanks for the additional ideas. I will definitely keep those things in mind for next time.

Michelle, that is funny. I just had a chance to pop over and read Alex’s wonderful post on what to take when traveling and had to smile. She has some wonderful suggestions that complement and add to what I’ve been writing about this week in my Traveling with a 9 Month Old series.
As for the travel bars – I’m still working on that one. They didn’t turn out quite how I wanted, so it might take a few more tries, but I’m determined to figure it out so it will be up on the site eventually ;)

Joanne, I agree with you about scrounging for food while traveling – hate it! These are some great additional suggestions. This time I ended up packing salad (due to your suggestion) and loved it. It was so easy to take and eat on the plane and so much better than the meal that they brought ;)
