Post-Election thoughts and readings…

There’s been a lot said in the blog world over the last few days about the election. Some are rejoicing, some are mourning, some are criticizing and some are honestly processing. Today I feel thankful that most of the people I choose to surround myself with have been thoughtful and compassionate throughout this election and continue to be so now at the close of it.

Last night we spoke briefly at bible study about the election and we started to talk about how “terrible” it can be when Christians so vehemently and even hatefully attack the “other side.” But, as we talked I (we) were reminded that when we talk about others like that then we are no different. I was reminded that some people don’t have the same world view I do, they read scripture differently and they come to different conclusions, and that is ok. The same God works in them. They are loved and cherished deeply. I often fall into feeling superior and criticizing the “stupidity” I see around me, but in doing so I am not showing love, I am not acting as Christ calls me to act. So, forgive me Lord, and change me, help me to love like you love. Help me to be able to really see and understand and have compassion and love for those who are different from me and those who think differently from me. In Jesus name.

Ok, so I know I’ve done a lot of linking lately but here are some posts about the election and its outcome that I thought I’d share:

The Element blog page had some good things to say about this election and people’s responses to it. I especially liked Chad Demiguel’s post entitled, After the fact.  He writes,

“As children of God, our response to the world should always be one of faith, hope and love. Let’s be proactive about praying for this next president, whoever he is. Let’s honor our leader in how we discuss him in conversation with others, especially if we disagree with him. Let’s be the kind of citizens that inspire those who don’t know God toward citizenship in the City of God. If for whatever reason we experience the best or worst four years our country has ever seen, let’s do what Martin Luther prescribes. Let’s plant a tree – meaning, let’s daily create God-inspired aspects of His kingdom. Let’s constantly, lovingly be on the lookout for how we can bestow life to a country that needs it so greatly.”

Sean and CJ Bergemen also shared some revealing and insightful thoughts on the Element blog in their posts, My Heart on 11.05.08 – Part 1 and My Heart as well. CJ writes,

“He is glorified when we take hold of every action and every deed. When we show restraint with our words. When we use our words to build each other up, when we don’t assume that everyone does or should believe everything we believe. I wrestled over my decision up until the last second of voting, and asked God to direct me the entire way… The more I thought and prayed about it, the more compelled I felt to be less sure that any opinion I have truly is the ‘right’ one, the one that honors God the most. I will continue to carry a sense in my heart that I may have made the wrong choice, which will remind me that ultimately Jesus is always the right choice, and praise God He is on the throne, and not me, and not a politician.”

“I get by with a little help from my friends”

Ok, so the last 2 weeks have been really hard for me and I think that they have been especially hard because I’ve felt really alone in the things that I have been going through. I think that is largely my fault. I think I have in many ways, conscious and unconscious, pulled away from people lately or only let them see little glimpses of what’s been going on in my heart. I’ve tried to focus on the good stuff and paint nice pictures for people and when things got deeper I quickly changed the subject or laughed it off. Even with Bryan. I mean, Bryan and I are definitely going through a lot together right now and we are together in it and walking through it together, but in many ways we have been dealing with it in our own ways on our own and that has added to my feeling of being alone in it.

This evening though, I had the humbling experience of twice listening to other people pray for me and my husband… it was humbling and uplifting. I deeply felt the tangible support of friends holding me and my husband and the situations we find ourselves in up to God. I remember thinking at one point tonight, “Lord, there is so much that I want to lift up to you, so many concerns and worries weighing on my heart, but they feel so heavy that I don’t think I even can lift them up to you.” And just after that someone else prayed and lifted me and the concerns of my life up to God. Twice tonight I was reminded of the story of when Aaron and Caleb (was it Caleb or someone else?) held up Moses hands because he couldn’t hold them up himself. I felt a little like that tonight. I felt bolstered, supported and held up tonight. I was reminded that I am not alone. God is with me, and he has also given me wonderful friends to walk through the journey with me. Thank you, Jesus.

I feel like this picture really sums up this post well. It’s a picture of my husband, Bryan, and our friend Mathias helping our friend’s baby, Isaiah up the slide. Isaiah loves to climb up the slide, but he’s too little to do it on his own. He needs other people to help him and push him up the slide. That’s what I felt like tonight, I felt like I needed other people to help me and push me up the slide to the throne of my King, and that is exactly what I got tonight.

And to each of my friends, here in Prague and other places around the world, thank you for supporting me. Thank you for pushing me up the slide. Forgive me for the times when I pull away from you and don’t let you into my life. Forgive me for the times when I don’t give you a chance to support me. And thank you for the ways in which you continue to pursue me and love me and lift me up.

Yoga and Prayer: Strength

Life has felt really overwhelming to me this week. I didn’t even realize until last night how truly overwhelmed I had become. I had felt all week a sort of off centeredness and I antsy agitation. I felt stressed and eager to do something. But, there was something else I was feeling all week that I couldn’t put my finger on… until last night. Overwhelmed. That’s what I’ve really been feeling and I’ve tried to dive into stuff and distract myself from it but in my heart I felt incredibly overwhelmed and helpless, out of control and powerless. But, I didn’t want to admit it to anyone, not even myself.

So, this morning knew that I needed to remember with my mind and my body that there is a power greater than myself. I needed to remember that God is in control even when I’m not, that God is powerful even when I am not. I needed to remember that God is not helpless and that he is with me. And I needed to remember that he had given and will give me strength for each day and the circumstances of each day. I needed to call on that truth and that strength.

So, for yoga today those are the things we focused on and drew our attention to. We did a lot of strong warrior poses, remembering that God does and will fight for us. We spent a lot of time coming back to and staying in Mountain Pose remembering that our God is a strong mountain and grounding ourselves in that truth. And we prayed together – prayed for God to be powerful over the situations of our lives that overwhelmed and scared us.

We used a few songs from the Four Tet album Rounds again today for music and each time we came into mountain pose I said Deuteronomy 31:6. So, here’s what we did:

Yoga and Prayer: Creativity

I believe that God is immensely creative, that seems so clear to me as I get to know him better and see how he works in people’s lives. And I also believe that we, as his creatures, are each and every one of us, creative beings. We were created to create (among other things). Lately, I have deeply desired to create. I feel like there is all this pent up creative energy in me that is pushing to be let free. So, as I designed the yoga routine for our women’s time of prayer this week I really focused on poses that are suppose to inspire creativity and productivity.

We did the whole asana series with Bach playing in the back ground and smiles on our faces. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did J

Sun Salutations (2 sets)

After a little while in Corpse pose we came up to Easy Pose and had a short time of meditation with our hands making a circle on our laps (right finger tips rest on top of left finger tips and thumbs touch lightly making a circle). During this time of meditation we focused our attention on the spot just below our belly button – where our wombs are and the place where life is created. Lord, make our whole lives fertile with creativity.

After a little while my friend, Elaine, led us in a beautiful prayer and then I closed with Ephesians 3:20-21: “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.”

But, I think my favorite part of the morning was that after we were done we sat around and talked for a while and then as some concerns and issues were shared in the conversation we just naturally jumped back into prayer – it was beautiful. I feel so blessed to have this time with these wonderful women! Thank you, Lord! Thank you!

Yoga and Prayer: The Psalms of Ascent

For yoga today I did a sequence of poses and had a verse from the Psalms of Ascent that went with each pose. We got into the pose and then I said the verse that went with it. A lot of the poses were repeated throughout the sequence and each time the same verse was read with them. For me there is something very powerful about hearing a verse and also feeling that verse as your body is in a specific position and having that same experience over and over again. In a way it’s like the verse begins to sink into more than just your conscious thoughts, it starts to sink into your muscle memory and your psyche.

For music today I used the cd, Rounds, by Four Tet

So, here’s what we did today:

Mountain Pose - “I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I put my hope.”

Upward Salute - “I lift up my eyes to the hills – where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”

Standing Forward Bend - “Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy”

Low Lunge (right leg back) - “I lift up my eyes to you, to you whose throne is in heaven.”

Downward Facing Dog (bend each knee one at a time like you are walking in down dog) - “Blessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in his ways.”

Low Lunge (left leg back) - “I lift up my eyes to you, to you whose throne is in heaven.”

Plank Pose - “If the Lord had not been on our side – let Israel say – If the Lord had not been on our side…”

Child’s Pose - “…the raging waters would have swept us away.”

Upward Facing Dog - “We have escaped like a bird. The snare has been broken, and we have escaped.”

Downward Facing Dog - “Our help is in the name of the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”
